2011-01-21 – Quick Update

By · January 21, 2011 · Filed in About, Blog · No Comments »

I just wanted to give everyone a quick update.  I have had some computer problems over the last few weeks and have not been able to publish any articles or work on my current design.  I have also started a new day job, which has kept me a bit preoccupied.  The computer is fixed now, and I am working on the next article in the ‘Corner Entertainment Center‘ series.  I should have it out in a few days.

After that, I will continue the Workshop design series as well.  I ran into a bit of a snag with that design;  I have to start the design completely over.  I no longer have access to that particular CAD system that I was designing it on, or even the CAD files for that matter.  That is a really long story that I am not going to get into here.  Once I get the design in Alibre back up to where I was before, then I will continue the article series.

Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know what was going on.

When I first began woodworking, back in the late 1990′s, Norm Abram’s “The New Yankee Workshop” was by far the most popular woodworking show on television.  Once I discovered the show, I couldn’t get enough of it.  Here was this regular joe, (ok, regular Norm) making such beautiful projects that almost anyone would want in their home.   And Norm made it look sooo easy!  Of course, nothing is as easy as it looks on television.  But that didn’t matter because I had been bitten by the “I can build that….” bug.   (more…)

About the Maple Grove Woodworks blog

Welcome to the Maple Grove Woodworks blog.  Maple Grove Woodworks is my own personal woodworking business.  Being a professional woodworker has long been a dream of mine.  I am not quite 100% there yet, as I still have my day job.

My day job actually helps my woodowrking business.  I use a Computer Aided Design (CAD) workstation to design tools for the plastic injection molding industry.  I have been able to design projects on my CAD workstation during lunch hours, or coming into work early.  This has been a huge help when figuring out complicated joints.

The CAD software I use is called Unigraphics.  It is quite a high end piece of software.  I don’t know for certain, but I think it is around $20,000 for a single license.  It is not something I would buy for a small single man woodshop.  But as long as I can use it for free it works great. :)

The initial purpose of this blog (I say initial because the purpose may change as the site evolves) is to document how I design and build my projects as well as a showcase for them.  Feel free to make comments or ask questions about any of my postings.  I hope to learn as much as I can from the woodworking community at large and help anyone else on their woodworking journey as well.
